Home Remedies for Pink Eye
Fortunately, there are a number of home remedies for pink eye that can help relieve the symptoms. It's important to note that these remedies may not cure the infection, but they can help to ease the symptoms and make you more comfortable.
Cold Compress
Applying a cold compress to the affected eye can help to reduce the swelling, redness, and burning sensation associated with pink eye. To make a cold compress, soak a clean washcloth in cold water and apply it to the affected eye for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day.
Salt Water Rinse
A salt water rinse can help to flush out the eye and reduce irritation. To make a salt water rinse, mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of water and use an eyedropper to apply the solution to your eye several times a day. Be sure to use a fresh solution each time.
Tea Bags
Tea contains tannins, which have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help to reduce the symptoms of pink eye. To use tea bags as a remedy, steep two tea bags in boiling water for several minutes and allow them to cool. Place the tea bags on your closed eyelids for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day.
Honey
Honey has both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, making it an effective home remedy for pink eye. To use honey as a remedy, mix 1 teaspoon of honey with 1 cup of water and use an eyedropper to apply the solution to your eye several times a day. Be sure to use a fresh solution each time.
Chamomile
Chamomile contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help to reduce the symptoms of pink eye. To use chamomile as a remedy, steep a chamomile tea bag in boiling water for several minutes and allow it to cool. Place the tea bag on your closed eyelids for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce the symptoms of pink eye. To use coconut oil as a remedy, apply a few drops of coconut oil to your closed eyelids several times a day.
Preventing Pink Eye
In addition to the home remedies listed above, there are a few simple steps you can take to prevent the spread of pink eye. Be sure to wash your hands frequently and avoid touching or rubbing your eyes. Avoid sharing towels, washcloths, or eye makeup with others. If you wear contact lenses, be sure to clean and disinfect them properly.
