The History of Home Runs

Baseball is one of America’s favorite pastimes. There’s nothing quite like watching a pitcher throw a fastball, or a batter hit a home run out of the park. Home runs are a part of baseball lore and there’s a long history of great players who have hit the most home runs of all time.

Barry Bonds

Barry Bonds is considered to be the greatest home run hitter of all time. He played for the San Francisco Giants from 1993 to 2007. During his career, he hit a total of 762 home runs, which is an all-time record. His record is unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon, as no other player has come close to matching it.

Hank Aaron

Hank Aaron was one of the most prolific home run hitters in baseball history. He played for the Atlanta Braves from 1954 to 1976 and hit a total of 755 home runs during his career. He was the first player to hit more than 700 home runs and is second only to Barry Bonds in total home runs.

Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth is often referred to as the greatest baseball player of all time. He played for the New York Yankees from 1914 to 1935 and hit a total of 714 home runs. He was the first player to hit more than 500 home runs, and his record stood for nearly 40 years until it was broken by Hank Aaron.

Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez is one of the most famous home run hitters in baseball history. He played for the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, and New York Yankees from 1994 to 2016 and hit a total of 696 home runs during his career. He is fourth on the all-time list and holds the record for most home runs in a single season, hitting 73 in 2007.

Willie Mays

Willie Mays is one of the greatest players of all time and is widely considered to be the best center fielder of all time. He played for the New York and San Francisco Giants from 1951 to 1973 and hit a total of 660 home runs during his career. He is fifth on the all-time list and is the only player to hit more than 600 home runs and steal more than 300 bases.

Ken Griffey Jr.

Ken Griffey Jr. is one of the most popular players in baseball history. He played for the Seattle Mariners and Cincinnati Reds from 1989 to 2010 and hit a total of 630 home runs during his career. He is sixth on the all-time list and was the youngest player to reach the 500 home run mark.

Harmon Killebrew

Harmon Killebrew is one of the most prolific home run hitters in baseball history. He played for the Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins, and Kansas City Royals from 1954 to 1975 and hit a total of 573 home runs during his career. He is seventh on the all-time list and was the first player to hit 50 home runs in a season.

Jim Thome

Jim Thome is one of the most underrated home run hitters in baseball history. He played for the Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox, and Baltimore Orioles from 1991 to 2012 and hit a total of 612 home runs during his career. He is eighth on the all-time list and was the first player to hit 600 home runs.
